ABOUT US
Kappa League is a subset of the Guide Right, our National Service Initiative. Under the chairmanship of Mel Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter’s Social Action Program took the form of a training activity for young men of the Alain Leroy Locke High School. The Kappa Instructional Leadership League was designed to help young men grow, receive, and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provided both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhanced their lives. Membership was open to male students from the tenth through the twelfth grades. The fraternity sought to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become the responsibility.
The Inception: Planting the Seed of Leadership (2019)
In the vibrant communities of Denton and surrounding areas, a powerful idea took root in 2019. Recognizing the need for a structured mentorship program for young boys in grades 6 through 12, the Denton Lewisville Alumni Chapter initiated the Kappa League program. This was no ordinary endeavor; it was a commitment to nurture the future leaders of tomorrow.
The force behind this transformative program was Dr. William Atkinson, a seasoned educator with 50 years of experience. Dr. Atkinson pioneered the Kappa League program for the chapter, infusing it with the wisdom and insights garnered from his extensive career.
The Structure: Guiding through Seven Phases
The Kappa League program was meticulously structured around the guiding 'Seven Phases': Self/Identification, Training, Competition, Social Wellness, Health Education, Economic Empowerment, and Educational, College, Academic, and Career Readiness. These phases were designed to offer the young participants a well-rounded development, equipping them with the skills and perspectives needed to excel in an increasingly complex world.
Milestones: From Mentorship to Scholarships (2023)
In just four years, the program saw incredible growth, both in terms of its reach and impact. In recognition of the program's high achievers, the Denton Lewisville Alumni Chapter introduced the DLA Guide Right Scholarship in 2023. This scholarship was specifically aimed at Kappa League members who demonstrated exceptional community involvement, academic excellence, leadership skills, and extracurricular achievements.
The Vision: Crafting an Elite Program
The goal of the Denton Lewisville Alumni Chapter is clear: to elevate the Kappa League program into an elite mentorship initiative that specializes in grooming boys of high achievement for leadership roles. The organization envisions a future where the Kappa League program serves as a benchmark for excellence, churning out responsible, empowered, and well-rounded individuals who are not just ready to face the world but are equipped to make it better.
The Legacy: Building Tomorrow's Leaders Today
As the Denton Lewisville Alumni Chapter Kappa League continues to evolve, its mission remains steadfast: to empower the young boys of Denton and surrounding areas through structured mentorship and education. With the continued support of the community, dedicated mentors like Dr. William Atkinson, and the hard work of its members, the Kappa League is not just a program; it's a movement, dedicated to building tomorrow's leaders, today.
