As October unfolds, the focus in our blog series shifts to one of the most vital components of long-term success—onboarding newly initiated members. Following the Membership Training Academy (MTA), Membership Intake Process (MIP) or whatever program your organization has. For the Denton-Lewisville Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi It is crucial to help new initiates and reclaimed brother transition smoothly into the chapter and province operations, ensuring they are equipped to contribute actively and effectively. This month, we spotlight the importance of a comprehensive post-MTA orientation that includes introducing the new members to the intricate workings of both their chapter and province programs.
Organizing the Orientation
A well-planned orientation session can lay the foundation for a new member's understanding of their roles and responsibilities. It should include the following key elements:
Etiquette and Protocol: New members must learn the expected decorum within the fraternity. This includes understanding the Protocol & Etiquette Manual of Kappa Alpha Psi, which covers proper dress code, meeting procedures, and public behavior. This session will ensure that all new Brothers are aware of how to present themselves and act during fraternity events, meetings, and ceremonies.
Constitution and By-Laws: To build a foundation of respect for fraternity rules, sessions should cover the Kappa Alpha Psi Constitution and By-Laws. These documents outline the guiding principles and the structural organization of the fraternity, helping new members grasp how decisions are made and what governs their actions within the chapter.
Robert’s Rules of Order & Meeting Decorum: Teaching new members how to engage in chapter meetings through Robert's Rules of Order will enhance their ability to contribute meaningfully to discussions. Understanding motions, voting procedures, and meeting structures will help them navigate fraternity business effectively.
Introduction to Committees and Projects: Every chapter has committees and regular projects. Introducing new members to these committees will empower them to find roles that match their skills and interests. Committees like Fundraising, Youth Leadership Development, Social Events, and Philanthropy are excellent places for new members to get involved, contributing to the fraternity’s mission of achievement in every field of human endeavor.
Standing Social Events and Fundraising Ideas: Social cohesion is crucial in a fraternity, and standing social events help to foster brotherhood. Moreover, fundraising is vital for the success of the chapter's philanthropic initiatives. This portion of the orientation will help new members and reclaimed members understand how they can contribute to these efforts, either by organizing events or actively participating in fundraising activities.
Integrating Chapter and Province Programs
New members must also be introduced to the larger structure of Kappa Alpha Psi, beyond their local chapter. Explaining the role of the Province and its key officers, like the Province Polemarch, will help them see how their chapter fits into the fraternity's national and international operations.
Empowering Active Participation
This month's focus is not just about informing; it's about empowering. The goal of these orientation sessions is to encourage new Brothers to step up, take leadership roles, and make meaningful contributions to the chapter. From etiquette and meeting decorum to committee involvement, every session is designed to enhance their confidence and ability to contribute effectively.
