On the evening of June 20, 2025, members of the Denton-Lewisville (TX) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. gathered at one of their favorite local spots—the 413 Lounge in Lewisville, Texas—for a relaxed and spirited night of brotherhood and appreciation. While the music pulsed in the background and laughter echoed through the venue, a moment of deeper significance emerged amidst the fun and fellowship.
At the heart of the evening was a ceremonial gift presentation—a heartfelt gesture that represented more than just appreciation. It marked a passing of the torch from one esteemed leader to another. Brother Randall V. Hawthorne, the current Polemarch, took the floor to recognize the leadership and steadfast service of Past Polemarch Brother Steve Johnson. With warm remarks and reverent tone, Brother Hawthorne presented a beautifully crafted commemorative gavel, engraved with the years of Brother Johnson’s leadership and the chapter’s crest—a symbol of authority, guidance, and stewardship.
The gavel, as simple as it may seem, carried a weight of tradition and gratitude. It was more than wood and metal; it embodied the wisdom, decisions, and sacrifices made during Brother Johnson’s administration. It represented discipline when needed, vision during times of change, and consistency during times of growth. By placing it in Brother Johnson’s hands as a token of appreciation, Brother Hawthorne honored not just the man, but the legacy he leaves behind.
Sedric Travis, the chapter’s dedicated Fundraising and Social Chairman, was instrumental in organizing the moment. Recognizing the value of celebrating leadership transitions with honor and meaning, he introduced the opportunity to present the gift during the evening’s gathering. His initiative reminded everyone in attendance that leaders deserve to be honored while they are present—not just remembered when they are gone.
The atmosphere was relaxed yet meaningful. Brothers gathered in clusters, sharing memories, future goals, and laughter as they reflected on how far the chapter has come. There were no formal speeches beyond the gift exchange—just the natural cadence of Brotherhood, respect, and joy. As drinks were shared and photos were taken, what lingered most was the sense of continuity and purpose.
This event wasn’t just a social gathering—it was a living expression of the chapter’s values. It demonstrated how the Denton-Lewisville Alumni Chapter embraces tradition, recognizes excellence, and encourages the next generation of leaders to step forward with the full support and admiration of those who came before.
From one Polemarch to another, the message was clear:
“Your leadership mattered. Your example lives on.”
As the evening wound down, the symbolic gavel stood as a reminder that each term of leadership in Kappa Alpha Psi is not just a role, but a sacred trust—passed from hand to hand, with faith in the future and honor for the past.
