It has often been said, “You cannot spell Denton-Lewisville without saying community service.” For nearly three decades, the Denton-Lewisville (TX) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has embodied that truth, making service to others its enduring legacy.
Since its founding in 1997, the chapter has stood as a staple of community service and civic action in Denton County. Even during the chapter’s period of inactivity from 2005 to 2018, brothers continued to serve as individual community members, ensuring that the spirit of Kappa remained visible. Since its return in 2018, the chapter has operated at full stride—leading initiatives that address local needs, supporting global missions, and exemplifying what it means to uplift a community.
A New Chapter of Leadership

The 2025–2026 fraternal year has opened with energy and direction under the leadership of Dr. Mikos Smith, who now chairs the Community Service Committee—also known as the Community Action Committee. This year marks a transition of leadership as Brother Ray Adkins concluded a remarkable three-year tenure as chairman, supported by his dedicated co-chair, Brother Frank Daniels. Together, their commitment not only kept the chapter’s service efforts consistent but also placed Denton-Lewisville on the Southwestern Province’s map as a chapter recognized for its excellence, including being awarded Medium Chapter of the Year in 2022.
At the provincial award ceremony, then–Southwestern Province Polemarch William Puder prefaced the announcement with words that still resonate: “This was one of the hardest working chapters I’ve ever seen.” That recognition highlighted not just the committee’s efforts but the collective spirit of a chapter that has made service its hallmark.
Brother Adkins follows in the legacy of past chairmen such as Brother Douglas Jackson, who helped solidify the committee’s reputation for impact. The chapter extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for their leadership, dedication, and countless hours of service. (See the article that highlights brother Adkins and Jackson's last event here).
Dr. Mikos Smith: Carrying the Torch Forward
With the mantle now passed, Dr. Smith has wasted no time in guiding the chapter toward greater visibility and deeper partnerships. Already, the committee has completed four community service events and counting—with more on the horizon.
Dr. Smith brings unique experience and influence to his role. In addition to leading the Community Service Committee, he also chairs the Civic Action Committee, spearheading voter registration drives and partnerships with local businesses and faith communities such as West Side Baptist Church. His reach extends beyond the chapter, serving as Vice President of the Non-Pan-Hellenic Council of Dallas, where he collaborates with a wide network of leaders to strengthen civic engagement across the region.
Brother Randal Hawthorne, Polemarch of the Denton-Lewisville Alumni Chapter, emphasized the importance of this leadership shift. Having served with Dr. Smith during his time in the Dallas Alumni Chapter, Brother Hawthorne recognized both his dedication and his vision. “We wanted to give long-serving brothers a chance to rest while also empowering younger brothers eager to serve,” he said. “Dr. Smith is the perfect bridge between experience and energy.”
Service Beyond the Committee
Dr. Smith also plays a critical role in the chapter’s Membership Training Academy (MTA), ensuring that new members are instilled with the same values of brotherhood and service that have long defined members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. His ability to balance multiple roles and responsibilities speaks to his dedication not only to the fraternity but also to the larger Denton County community.
The brothers of the Denton-Lewisville (TX) Alumni Chapter are proud to have his leadership, and the administration stands united in supporting his initiatives.
A Rich Legacy, A Bold Future
From disaster relief efforts highlighted in a previous article, the aftermath of Flood the Hill Country of Texas and the Deadly tornado near Sanger, TX, working with local community organizations for Cemetary Clean-up support to missionary trips abroad, the Denton-Lewisville (TX) Alumni Chapter members have consistently lived out the Fraternity’s motto of Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor. With the history of impactful leaders and the fresh drive for new leadership, the chapter looks forward to building stronger bonds with community partners and offering every brother an opportunity to serve.
As the committee continues its work in the 2025–2026 year, one thing remains clear: community service is not just an obligation—it is the lifeblood of the chapter. Together, one brother, one event, one act of service at a time, Denton-Lewisville will continue to make a difference.
