The Community Action Committee (CAC) of the Denton-Lewisville (TX) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has long been a driving force for positive change in the community. Through consistent service, strategic partnerships, and a deep commitment to the fraternity’s mission of Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor, the CAC continues to make a meaningful difference for local families—especially during times of heightened need.

This latest outreach effort, held on a bright summer morning in Denton and Lewisville, Texas, demonstrated the committee’s unwavering dedication to ensuring students start the school year with the tools, resources, and encouragement they need to succeed. By bridging the gap between the summer break and the first day of class, the CAC reminded families that community support doesn’t end when the cameras are gone or the headlines fade—it’s an ongoing commitment.

A Moment of Transition and Legacy

This event carried a special significance for the chapter as it marked a leadership transition within the CAC. Brother Ray Adkins, the outgoing chairman, completed his final official act in the role by coordinating and delivering this impactful set of donations. Standing alongside him during the day’s outreach was Brother Douglas Jackson, a past CAC Chairman whose leadership and experience have shaped much of the committee’s operational approach.

The collaboration between Brothers Adkins and Jackson symbolized the strength of continuity—past and present leadership working together to ensure the mission is carried forward without interruption. Both men have contributed greatly to building and sustaining strong relationships with community partners, ensuring the CAC’s service remains both meaningful and consistent.

As Brother Adkins passes the torch, Dr. Mikos Smith steps into the role of CAC Chairman. While he was unable to attend this particular event, Dr. Smith inherits a well-structured committee with a strong foundation—positioning him to continue and expand the committee’s impact in the years ahead.

Supporting Students in Two Communities

The outreach targeted two critical back-to-school initiatives in Denton County, reflecting the CAC’s commitment to serving multiple communities simultaneously.

Karen’s Closet – Lewisville

Partnering with Karen’s Closet, an organization dedicated to providing clothing and supplies to students in need, the CAC delivered 40 backpacks filled with essential school supplies. These backpacks represent more than paper, pencils, and folders—they symbolize hope, encouragement, and the belief that every student deserves to walk into their first day of school ready to learn and confident in their abilities.

MLK Center – Denton

At the MLK Center in Denton, the CAC contributed another 40 backpacks, additional school supplies, and over 160 hotdog buns to help support the center’s upcoming back-to-school event on Monday. The inclusion of food alongside school items highlights the CAC’s holistic approach to service—recognizing that true support addresses both academic readiness and basic needs.

Community Impact That Lasts

While it is easy to measure service in numbers—80 backpacks, hundreds of supplies, and food for dozens of families—the deeper story lies in what these acts represent. Each backpack given is a reminder to a child that someone believes in their future. Each handshake and smile shared is an affirmation that they are seen, valued, and supported.

The CAC’s consistent presence in Denton and Lewisville builds more than event attendance—it builds trust. It strengthens relationships between the chapter and the community. And it reinforces the idea that service is not a one-time gesture but a continuous cycle of giving, connecting, and uplifting.

Continuing the Legacy of Service

As Brother Adkins steps down, he leaves behind a legacy rooted in reliability, compassion, and action. His leadership—bolstered by the continued support and engagement of past leaders like Brother Jackson—has ensured that the CAC remains a pillar of community engagement, capable of responding quickly to needs while maintaining long-term impact.

With Dr. Smith stepping into the role, the committee is poised for continued growth and innovation. The vision is clear: to keep expanding outreach efforts, strengthening partnerships, and delivering tangible results that align with the values of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

From school supplies to mentorship, from backpacks to building relationships, the Denton-Lewisville CAC will continue to stand as a visible and active force for good—uplifting students, supporting families, and strengthening the fabric of the community one act of service at a time.
